I adore middle-schoolers: kids between the ages of 9 and 12. After years of mentoring middle and high teachers and writing non-fiction, I'm currently working on a contemporary fantasy series for middle-grade girls. What a challenge! The one thing I know for sure is that you cannot hand this special group of readers watered down young adult fiction or 'watered up' chapter books. Would you like to help me--and yourselves--craft the best middle school fiction we can?
What: A book club for avid romance novel readers. Meetups not exclusively limited to book discussions. My hope is to get to know new people and building some new friendships (most of my friends are in Europe or scattered across the country). Who: Any avid romance novel reader with an open mind and a sense of humor. Why: I haven't been able to find a book club geared towards romance novels (most exclude them), and especially not in the East Bay. I commute a lot during the week for work, so I woul …
Back by popular demand... First, thanks for taking the first step in joining a special group of ladies who love to read, chat, over enjoy a glass of wine. I initially started this group two years ago because I am a book junkie who was looking to join a book club in the area and found none. After a year on Facebook, I decided it was time to take the group back were it all started. We read mostly contemporary lit, but do mix it up every so often with a classic. This is the book club for anyone who …

A place to share tips and tools for independent publishing on screens. How to publish your work on ebooks, or on iPads, or tablets, or phones, or desktop screens. Mostly book and magazine-like content, but anything with words as well as images. Come tell us what is working for you, and what has not worked.
About the East Bay Book Club The East Bay Book Club is a very dynamic group of individuals who share one thing in common: an enthusiasm for books. Each month, members read a particular book, chosen by the whole group or by the Organizer, and meet to share observations, insights, and personal thoughts about it. Meetings are devoted to various genres, both contemporary and classic. Although the club is based in Berkeley, CA, book readers from any geographical area are welcome to join. The club's …
This get-together is for individuals looking for a place to re-center after a busy week, participate in a discussion about an inspirational book, and enjoy some good food. I reside in a rather cozy apartment with minimal furniture, so be prepared to sit on the floor! Instead of asking for donations, I thought it would be much more enjoyable if members arrived with a small dish (nothing fancy) or beverage (no alcohol, please). Book recommendations are welcomed with open arms. I look forward to me …
Join the Biz-erkeley Book Club. We meet on the third Thursday of each month at the Berkeley City Club, 2315 Durant Ave., Berkeley, CA.
A Sunday afternoon, a glass of wine, a few snacks, a fantastic piece of playwriting, and a group of avid play readers who like to have fun! What could be better? East Bay PlayReaders is a group for amateurs who are theater lovers and would like the social experience of group reading. The group is open to anyone, and actors can join, but the purpose is to bring in non-professionals who want to be a part of a playreading, without theater experience. The venue we have chosen is in Alameda, CA. , b …

So what's the worst part of most book groups? Being forced to read a book you simply don't want to read. And what's the best part: getting all those great book recommendations! In this meet up, we're going to dispense with the book *reading* and go straight to the recommending ... and we'll do it with a game I call the "Book Auction". Each participant brings 2 of their favorite books (1 fiction, 1 non-fiction) -- these can be books off your shelf, or new purchases from a store. At the door, ever …
For readers of the Online Community Report or others interested in the topic of online community management, online social networking applications and online group collaboration. We discuss tools and strategies to enhance participation on various online communities that we support.
Like to read? Like to socialize? Come bring a book to swap at Books and Booze! Events are held around happy hour time and each member can bring and take home a book of their choice. See you there!
Welcome to our Meetup! The book club is structured around reading and discussing one non-fiction book each month, typically on the second Sunday of the month but rescheduled as needed based on holidays or other special events. Meetups are facilitated by the organizer (or an occasional guest) to provide structure and direction to the discussion. All members are encouraged to provide their opinions, and all opinions are valued and respected. At the end of the meeting members will vote on a list of …

So this year we are celebrating 60 years with 007. Sure, Skyfall is a great movie, but what about the books? We'll be reading Ian Fleming's books starting with Casino Royale. Sure we'll talk about the movies: George Lazenby et al but it'll be fun to actually read the original intents. The locales of these books run the gamut from Las Vegas to London to Istanbul to Jamaica to Mahe Island. Hopefully we can find bars/restaurants that correspond to the locales and rap.
Meetup details are available only to members.
I am new to San Francisco from the east coast and looking to meet some new girlfriends. I started and was a member of a book club in New Jersey and loved it. This group is for ladies only (sorry boys) in their 20s/early 30s who are looking to meet some new friends and share their love of reading. After all, there is nothing like a good book to start a conversation! And of course, a few cocktails will be involved. Looking for some fun, chilled out ladies who want to make great friends and have go …
There are several Meetup book clubs in the East Bay, but many of them are specialized (e.g., women-only, we only read such-and-such books, etc.), or their meetings fill to capacity so fast that I never get a chance to rsvp - so I decided to start this one. I previously participated in a fantastic book club in Chicago, which gave me the opportunity to read some great books that I probably wouldn't have found on my own. I hope to continue that trend here! This is a mixed-gender book club for anyon …

Small groups will get together to read aloud to one another and appreciate the written and spoken word (and simply have a good time). Each person brings a short selection (fiction, poetry, nonfiction, whatever). Folks also bring drink and nibbles to share. Fancy or not. Meetings will vary; formats will evolve. My small kitchen will be the setting for some events; perhaps others will volunteer their kitchens as well. We may also decide to have thematic events, such as reading appropriate selectio …
We meet monthly at the library to share thoughts about great books; served with a bit of light refreshment. Visit San Francisco Public Library/Mission Branch to pick up a copy of our monthly book title ~ February selection: The Hundred Secret Senses by Amy Tan. For March we will read The Marriage Plot, by Jeffrey Eugenides.

If we leave it to the local news, Oakland’s reputation will be forever linked to the same old storylines: Art Murmur, racial tension, Brooklynization*, and crime. How can we work together to reveal the deeper story? Maybe you’ve been blogging for a while and want to meet new local people. Maybe you want to increase your social media presence. Maybe you’re new to the area and full of stuff to say, and you need new connections to grow your audience. Or maybe you’ve always wanted to blog and just …

From the founder: Upon graduation, I promised myself I would never wear a suit, nor would I work in an office. Fate threw me suited up into an office for seven years. This was my tour of duty in the illusory world of hierarchical control, greed, fear and systemic hypnosis. I was living a half-life, and no-one was more aware of this fact than I was. There were, of course, moments of stunning humanity in my time in “the office” working as a financial adviser and all round salesman for the corpor …
